Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at each end of the field

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous balls into the Spurs box.
