France to begin intercepting migrant vessels in Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader sent a letter to the French leader asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to authoritative confirmation.
French police have infrequently intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French naval police representative states officers will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a possible technique to disable the engines of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a significant step forward, coming after a short-lived shift towards a stricter strategy this summer, which ceased when the former government official left government.
That was highlighted in the summer month, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a vessel.
Now French officials will again be allowed to intercept boats before they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be prevented.
Strong winds are presently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking networks will be seeking ways to adjust to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the past.
